It is said the Hot spring of Atami can date back to one thousand several hundred years ago, when hot water gushed up to the surface of the sea and inlet of the village was covered with hot water. This is the origin of the word Atami in Japanese character 熱 海 (hot sea).

Then thanks to the prayer and devotion by a virtuous priest, the gushing of the hot water was transferred from the sea to the land. Since then fishermen have had being saved their occupation and villagers have been enjoying the benefits from the hot spring.

At present, I can imagine the town is on an ancient caldera (Please look at the picture) and the water deep in the underground is still heated up and offers us Onsen Hot Spring.

For us, Atamians, the hot spring is the gift from the earth!
